R2 blues…

Well, sorry for the lack of updates, i’ve been a bit depressed as i managed to break R2’s ankle at an even for Star Wars in Concert in Memphis back in May.  I’ve not gotten around to repairing it yet due to funds but hopefully that will be changing soon, VERY soon!

Work Work Work

Well, this week has been rather not great for R2. Although I have all the leg measurments laid out to be able to take it to the machinist to have them attached, yesterday i was unable to go due to my real job. This was very frustrating as the machinist doesn’t have time today to work on it and will be out of town on Friday, meaning that i’m stuck without legs until at least Monday.

I have however been able to work on some other parts while waiting, including building the surrounding boxes for the octogon ports, working more on the internal sound system (which after messing with for a while, i’m thinking i need to upgrade it to the CFIII system), and today i plan to contruct the front vents.

I’ve decided i need to go ahead and start working on the external look and start getting the detail parts ready as much as possible.  I’ve also decided that i need to go ahead and mount the holoprojectors and the Radar eye on the dome.  I’m setting aside saturday for that, along with more painting.

It feels good to try to write more often than i have been doing, hopefully i’ll be able to keep this up now that I have a new site and it looks decent :)   And here’s a shoutout to @dawnazgcw for reminding me that i need to post more often :P

R2’s Texas Trip and Newest Update

After racking up the mileage going to Dallas and Houston for a couple of weeks, R2 managed to make it back from Texas, though not unscathed. With a slight reactor leak (well, he kinda had a meltdown, litterally) in the dome drive setup, R2 was still able to make it home in one piece and is working again thankfully.

July 4th Weekend Build Update

Well, traveled east over to Crossville, TN to hang out with my good friend Bluewolf and partake in some R2 building excitement over the weekend!

SOOO much got accomplished, mainly because Bluewolf is a workoholic!! Can’t give enough thanks to him for all that he did! I wasn’t very familiar with some of the stuff that needed to be done, where as, he was, and just went at it knocking out as much as possible.   About the only thing we didn’t get to that was on the optional agenda was finishing the main legs… we got them drawn out on the wood, but didn’t get a chance to cut them out as we were both so tired on Sunday (and i was getting called from work right and left and was stuck on the computer most of the time)

Overall, I went from having basically nothing done, to having a dome with all the inserts painted (still waiting on resin pieces for the radar eye, logics, and dome bumps), having a wood frame completely built, and having the rocklear bearing attached to the frame, as well as having the dome parts that hook to the rocklear attached… this way, i’m still able to pull the dome off of the rocklear!

A few things that i need to do still is maybe toss a screw or two in the frame. While i think it will be fine, i’d like to give it just a bit more structural integrity just to be on the safe side. While i have attached my blue panels to the dome with putty, i need to pull those back off, finish sanding the dome itself and polishing it to give it a better shine (currently very dull looking) and i also need to finish cutting out parts for the inner dome  (only have the back holo hole cut out currently). I believe i will need to cut out the other 2 holo holes, the front and rear logic holes, and was thinking of taking out a panel or 2 to make into doors, but havnt decided yet, guess i need to though.

Anyways, here’s a few pics of the weekend, all taken on my iPhone, cause i completely forgot about my normal camera that was sitting in my bag all weekend… LOL

2009 Droid Buildoff … May 15-17

Well, finally updating the blog from my adventures in Dallas last week. Had a wonderful time down in Rowlett TX (Dallas) at Jerry’s droid extravaganza. This was a 3 day event, Friday through Sunday.

Friday afternoon was basically a big meet and greet.  As i’d only met like 3 or 4 of the guys before this event, getting to know names and faces and try to attach them to handles i know online took a bit for me. Everyone was very nice and was good to meet so many folks.

Saturday morning unfortunately brought rain. This forced all the droids into the garage and we held most of the “workshops” inside.  By mid afternoon, things started drying up somewhat, which at least allowed us to eat outside for the wonderful BBQ that Jerry provided. Afterwards, some of us hung around to continue to work on projects. As i didn’t have any of my own stuff to work on, i just hung out with Neil and Doug as they worked on a J.E.D.I. System and then some microcontroller stuff… this was all pretty interesting to me as i had not been around such neat gizmo’s before!

Sunday was just completely gorgeous!!!  What a wonderfully sunny and nice feeling day to be outside. All the droids were out and about playing, sans Wayne’s as he was unable to make it Sunday and Monty’s who unfortunatly had front foot issues and was under repair all day.

Jerry even got his B9 out of the garage for the first time and drove it around the driveway (leaving some scraping as he went).  All the movable bots got out and danced to some music provided by Monty’s R2.

All in all, just a wonderful weekend, i was sad to have to leave. As i basically live in the middle of nowhere, all my friends are either in NW Ark or other states.  I really need to think about getting a higher paying job and moving near friends sometime soon, it’s annoying to have to make a 6hr drive to see people ya know. lol

Anyways, enough bellyaching. You can check my gallery on this site, or go straight to my flickr gallery to see all the pics from the weekend. I also have a video from Friday on YouTube right now. I have more that i need to post as well

Headed out on a Jet Plane

travelOk, so looks like i’ve been bumfuzzled into flying to LA for the first weekend of May to visit all my western US friends… It will also mark my first trip to a Disney park (well, any major theme park) since 1992… so i’m really looking forward to this trip!!!

This is probably going to set me back for buying R2 parts for a bit… but it’s a sacrifice i’m willing to make. I’m just in a spontaneous mood right now and desparatly want to get out of Arkansas since i’m having to miss 3 con’s that i wanted to go to in April.

Speaking of R2 parts. Nothing new to report on that front just yet.  I’m needing to get some resin parts for the Dome, as i expect my 300 dome to be here probably next week sometime. It would be nice to have those parts so that when i do get the dome and get stuff cut out, I can get everything ready to go fitted for it… i could concievably have the dome (minus electronics) done before i even get the main frame built  LOL…  I’ve also been going through the Astromech.net boards and finding as many journal’s and pic galleries of builds as i could so that i can learn as much as possible before even touching parts. Hopefully it will pay off.

Other than that, been busy working with my cousin’s business trying to get them a community website for Gillett setup. That and working on their office network some, which is trying when they keep having the server reboot due to not having it on a battery backup.  But alas, they are getting by, and they actually pay me, so i don’t suppose i should really complain :)

If only the WoW servers would come up so i could play. I always dislike patch days… especially when it’s a big patch with new content… and i have to just sit and wait and realize that i’m probably not going to get to raid the new content tonight, it will just be there and laugh as the server crawls… i digress..
