All-Con Weekend!

Well, will be leaving for Dallas early Thursday morning. Hopefully everything is packed as i usually tend to forget something. Riding down there with 3 friends. Generally i don’t like to ride with other people as i like to be in control of my vehicle and know i do/go wherever i want, but figured this would save on expenses and help them out too.
Looking forward to seeing Pyro and Trigger again, along with all their cohorts in the Assination City derby group. Had a great time partying with them last year, and was great to see them in Arkansas earlier this year
This trip will also hopefully give me a chance to meet some other R2 builders. I know there is a group in the Dallas/FtWorth area, and would love a chance to talk with some of them and see their astromechs up close. I think i have a good handle on the physical frame/skin and such, but still unsure of myself on the rc/electronics portion of things, and this would give me a good chance to see up close what is going on before starting on my own.
Of course no con is complete without the 501st, and I will be thrilled to see all my Star Garrison buddies again. I really need to get down to Texas to troop more often!! Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol on BSG) will also be joining us this year as a special guest of the 501st. He is a hoot to hang with, glad he could make it back this year.
All in all, hope to have a great weekend. Probably won’t get a chance, but will try to post a blog or two from the con.
Woot! Good news on the droid front

So, spent some time today talking with my cousin who just happens to own a manufacturing plant. Although i haven’t been successful in getting any cad drawing of an r2 like frame, i showed him what i was wanting to do, and as luck would have it, he said it shouldn’t be a problem, i just needed to create the 2d line drawings for the parts i want! He could probably even just cut it out of stuff they scrap so i won’t even have to buy the aluminum except for the skin due to it’s thinness since they do not produce anything that thin.
So now my next quest is to start designing my own R2 frame. I’m going to do my absolute best to do this from club dimensions on the boards of course. We’ll see how it works, i’ve been doing some hand notes, and will start the cad work probably when i get back from dallas this weekend.
Here’s a pic of some steel cut via the plasma cnc i have access too! It was pretty cool to use

Tonight, did a lot of research on various part runs that are currently happening over at astromech.net. Consulted with my buddy John who is also starting a new droid with me (misery love company afterall) and we think we have decided how we will start out with the dome lighting system since there is currently a group run going.
Also discussed frame and skin issues with John, who has great input. I’ll be visiting my cousin’s manufacturing place this week to see if they are able to cut a lot of the piecs for us to be able to save some money. Wow is this endeavor expensive… lol

Well… had an informal get together yesterday with a few squad members for a member’s daughter’s birthday. Happy Birthday Claire!
Originally we were going to troop this, but with all that was going on this week with All-Con coming up and with the kids having so much fun just hanging out bowling and playing the gameboy’s and such, it was decided we’d just hangout as well.
Was a great time, and thanks to Jeremy for inviting everyone! Only 4 days till All-Con!
Who Watched the Watchmen?? I did!

Night Owl
I was iritated by the cgi they did for Dr. Manhattan as they just never got his facial movements right, but apparently they had people working full time on his naughty bits. That was a little over the top in my book, as i didn’t feel the need to see his blue stuff swinging on screen. There is a problem with a movie when there is more time spent with male naughty bits showing than with female parts, but i digress.
Other than the 2 issues i had with Dr. Manhattan, i found the movie to be pretty good. Not sure if it will live up to it’s hype at the box office, but i will say i didn’t feel like i wasted my $8. Truth be told, if a friend wanted to go see it, i’d probably go see it again.
My favorite part of the movie was actually the opening credits, as they showed a montage of the old minute men doing various things on screen, and i found it interesting.
There were changes from the book, and for the most part they didn’t really bother me that much. Generally i like to stay as true to the books as possible, but i felt the changes they made probably worked better than some of the comic stuff would have. Synder has already said that the dvd compilation would have MUCH more footage in there along with a ton of extras, so i’m very looking forward to that release.
Now i need to go finish my Lego Watchmen decals before people have a fit
